Breathtaking Views
Over the course of my “World Tour”, I have participated in a bunch of different group tours. Some are chill and some thrilling. This one? Unforgettable and definitely worth sharing. Everyday was a new adventure filled with so many surprises.
Sailing Komodo was a completely spontaneous three-day adventure. I stumbled across it while finishing up my time in Ubud and googling, “Where should I go next?” When I saw a tour that included Komodo Dragons, I thought, How could I not? When else am I going to see something that looks like it’s right out of Jurassic Park. After some confusion with booking and payment (because why wouldn’t there be?), I secured the suite at the top of the boat—complete with a tub on the balcony. Fancy, right? It was… but the “suite” is small. Let’s face it, you are on a boat. Do not bring your huge suitcase. Pack light, like really light!
Getting to Labuan Bajo, where the boat departs, is easy enough. You take a direct flight from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) to Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo. The flight is just 1.5 hours, which gives you enough time to mentally prepare for living on a boat for three days. Pro tip: it’s not a cruise ship, so adjust your expectations accordingly and when I said pack light, I mean pack light! I stayed in a hotel in Labuan Bajo for one night. Went on the Komodo Cruise and then stayed at the same hotel again the night I returned. This was perfect as the hotel was a hop, skip and a jump from the pier and I was able to leave my big suitcase at the hotel while I was on the boat. It worked out perfectly.
Once on board, I spent three unforgettable days with an amazing group of people. People from all over the world with whom I still keep in touch. The itinerary was packed with snorkeling in stunning waters, hiking at sunrise, and feasting on some delicious meals. Oh, and the Komodo Dragons? Very cool, but (and don’t come for me here) not the most exciting part of the trip. We sailed to several different islands and soaked up the sun on some really beautiful beaches.
The tour guides were top-notch—full of knowledge and eager to share details about everything we saw. I mean everything! They captured our adventures with photos and drone footage, leaving us with plenty of memories to look back on. Honestly, they went above and beyond.
I’d love to tell you every detail, but I won’t. There are so many surprises along the way, and spoiling them would be a crime. Just know that the entire trip is breathtaking from start to finish. If you’re debating whether to go, just do it. Seeing the dragons might be the headline, but trust me—the real magic is everything else.
