The Healing Power of Grounding: How Grounding Helped Me Kick Grief's ASS!

Updated: Mar 18

Grounding is a transformative practice that connects us to the Earth's natural energy. Since I began my journey with grounding in 2018, following the tragic loss of my brother, I discovered it as a powerful source of healing and connection. My grief was so overwhelming that I couldn't sit still. Losing a sibling, my brother, my best friend, brought up so many emotions, thoughts and fears for me. I didn't know what to do with myself so I started to just walk and walk and walk. No air pods, no shoes, no phone, no distractions and no plan. Then before long, each day at dusk, I would step outside to connect with the earth beneath my feet with intention, allowing it's energy to wash over me. It took time to be able to really focus but after a bit of practice it was easy and really helped me to move past anger and on to other things that served me. In this blog post, I’ll share the benefits of grounding, the best practices, and how you can incorporate it into your life.

What is Grounding?

Grounding, also known as earthing, involves walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil. This practice allows us to absorb the Earth's electrons, which can have numerous health benefits. Studies suggest that grounding can improve mood, reduce inflammation, and promote better sleep.(I'm not sure it helped much with this, I have always had terrible sleeping habits, currently a work in progress) It’s a way to reconnect with nature and detach from the stresses of modern life.

When I started grounding, I didn't realize how powerful this simple act could be. Living in a fast-paced world often disconnects us from the people around us nature, and even ourselves. But through grounding, we can regain that essential connection. The experience can be incredibly spiritual and restorative, helping you to feel a sense of peace and calm. After a few times I started to incorporate practicing be grateful as my anger of was preventing me from doing that. Soon my walks were filled with gratitude and peace rather that anxiety.

The Best Times for Grounding

Choosing the right time of day to practice grounding can enhance its benefits. Early mornings and dusk are ideal, allowing you to enjoy cooler temperatures. The sun is less intense during these times, making it more pleasant to walk barefoot.

In colder climates, it's essential to find a way to ground even when the weather is not ideal. Grounding mats or patches can be excellent solutions. These products are designed to connect you electrically to the Earth, providing the same benefits as outdoor grounding. You can use them while sitting at your desk, watching television, or even sleeping. I have used grounding mats in colder climate and its a great solution if you are unable to walk barefoot outside.

The Science Behind Grounding

Numerous studies have investigated the physiological impacts of grounding. Research has shown that grounding can reduce inflammation, improve sleeping patterns, and enhance overall well-being.

The science primarily centers on the transfer of electrons from the Earth. These electrons have antioxidant effects, neutralizing free radicals in the body. By grounding ourselves, we can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to improved physical health.

Moreover, people report feeling more relaxed after grounding sessions. YES! This relaxation can be attributed to the drop in cortisol levels, often referred to as the stress hormone.

My Personal Experience with Grounding

Since starting my grounding journey, I’ve noticed substantial changes in my mental and emotional health. Initially, I sought grounding as a means to cope with the loss of my brother. The practice provided me with a way to connect with the Earth and find solace in nature.

On days when I felt overwhelmed by grief, grounding helped me reclaim a sense of peace. I used to dread the mornings, my feet would hit the floor and I would be like UGH! But now I look forward to the ritual of stepping outside, feeling the grass underfoot, and breathing in the fresh air.

It's important to note that grounding isn’t just a remedy for grief. It’s also an excellent practice for anyone seeking greater emotional balance, mental clarity and/or overall better physical well being.

Final Thoughts

Grounding is more than just a practice; it's a journey toward reconnection with ourselves and nature. Whether it’s dealing with personal trauma or simply seeking a balanced state of mind, grounding can offer significant benefits.
