Discovering Argentina: The Charm of Buenos Aires and the Majestic Iguazú Falls

Argentina a land of vibrant culture and breathtaking natural wonders, is a country that captivates the heart of every traveler. From the streets of Buenos Aires to the thundering cascades of Iguazú Falls, this South American gem offers a dynamic blend of urban sophistication and awe-inspiring landscapes. Let’s dive into the highlights, starting with the capital city and its iconic green spaces, followed by a journey to one of the world’s most stunning waterfalls.

Buenos Aires, often called the "Paris of South America," (learned this while traveling here...is a city where European elegance meets Latin flair. Its neighborhoods, or "barrios," are diverse, each offering a unique slice of Argentine life.  And be prepared, everything starts later here.  So take a little rest and plan to go to dinner around 10:30 pm, lol

Must-Try Food & Drinks

  • Asado- This is more than just a dish; it's a cultural experience featuring a variety of grilled meats, including beef, pork, sausages, and blood sausage, cooked over an open fire.

  • Empanadas- These are savory, half-moon-shaped pastries filled with various ingredients like meat, cheese, or vegetables, baked or fried

  • Provoleta- A grilled cheese made from provolone cheese, seasoned with spices and cooked until crispy on the outside and melted on the inside.

  • Yerba Mate- A popular beverage made from the dried leaves of the yerba mate plant, often enjoyed throughout the day.

Best Places to Eat

Don Julio–A classic parrilla (steakhouse) that serves excellent Argentine beef. It’s very popular, so expect a wait, but it's worth it for the quality of the food.

El Preferido de Palermo – A charming, restored traditional Argentine deli and bar that serves local classics with a modern flair. The atmosphere is cozy and nostalgic.

Café des Arts – Located in the heart of Palermo, this café offers a European-inspired menu with delicious pastries, coffee, and a variety of breakfast and lunch options.

Iconic Places to Visit

Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays-Nestled in the Palermo neighborhood, the botanical garden is a tranquil oasis in the midst of the city and features over 5,000 species of plants from around the globe. Stroll along winding paths, marvel at ornate fountains, and relax in the shade of towering trees.  I realized while visiting  here that I do not know how to read a paper map at all and I am grateful for GPS.

Paseo El Rosedal- a sprawling rose garden that seems to go on forever. It is said to have over 18,000 roses, it's occupied by charming gazebos, and a serene lake. Rent a paddleboat, enjoy a picnic, or simply wander the meticulously maintained grounds.  It was very clean and I enjoyed my time here, however I was not overwhelmed by a sea of roses.

Puente de la Mujer (Bridge of the Woman) stands as a symbol of Buenos Aires’ architectural innovation. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, this striking pedestrian bridge resembles a couple dancing tango, paying homage to Argentina’s beloved art form.  The bridge is beautiful and illuminated at night, it offers stunning views of the surrounding skyline.

Tango Lessons- The lesson I booked was cancelled at the last minute so unfortunately I did not get to experience this, should be on your to-do list though.

Iguazú National Park, home to the awe-inspiring Iguazú Falls. Straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil, these waterfalls are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

With 275 cascades stretching nearly two miles, Iguazú Falls engages all five senses. The roar of the water, the mist in the air, and the lush rainforest backdrop, the smell of the flowers and the taste of a cold beer, hehehe! All  create an unforgettable experience.

Highlights include:

  • Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat): A U-shaped cascade that’s the most dramatic of the falls. Walk along the viewing platform for a close-up encounter with this natural wonder.  It was packed and we were all shoulder to shoulder.

  • Eco-train: Hop on the park’s eco-friendly train to explore various trails and viewing points.

  • Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for toucans, coatis, and butterflies as you wander through the park.

Pack your day bag and don't forget a change of clothes, you're gonna get wet!  And don't be afraid to visit both sides.  It's an all day event but well worth it!

Not sure which side to visit.  Lets figure it out together at www.travelingyankee.com/
